Firearm Licensing

Good Reason

Firearm legislation requires a certificate holder to have good reason to possess a firearm and it is the responsibility of the applicant to justify their request to acquire or possess such a firearm.

Good reason is normally achieved through:

  • Shooting vermin/game/stalking - An applicant should show that they will be using the firearms for these purposes and if they do not own suitable land should provide written permission to shoot. A Firearm Land Authority Form (FELS 5) is available to assist with this purpose.
  • Target shooting - An applicant must be a full member of a target shooting club and should be able to confirm this.

Where a certificate holder does not utilise an authority to acquire a weapon this could raise doubt over their good reason and may be reviewed.
