Firearm Licensing

Grant Applications

Anyone wishing to apply for the grant of a certificate should contact staff at the Firearms and Explosives Licensing office for initial advice and guidance.

Firearm legislation requires a certificate holder to have good reason to possess a firearm and it is the responsibility of the applicant to justify their request to acquire or possess a firearm.

A Firearm Application Form, and two Reference Forms are required for the grant or renewal of a firearm certificate. Form FELS 19 provides guidance for the completion of these forms.

A Shot Gun Application Form is required for the grant or renewal of a shot gun certificate. Form FELS 18 provides guidance for the completion of this form.

The completed forms and appropriate fee should be returned to the Firearms and Explosives Licensing office. Once received, enquiry will be made and you will be contacted by a firearms enquiry officer who will arrange to come and see you. At the same time the details of firearms will be checked and security inspected.

All firearm and shot gun certificates are valid for a period of five years.

Renewal notices, with all necessary forms, are automatically sent to certificate holders 12 weeks before the expiry of current certificate.
