Farm Security

Dumfries and Galloway is a region that frequently experiences thefts from farm or rural properties.

Farm assets are spread over many acres and through stock and equipment, can take a variety forms. Most of these are portable and easy to steal. Furthermore, with the majority of farms having an easy access, total security often proves to be impossible. There are a number of methods to combat this however and many of them do not involve extra expense.

Try to secure or immobilise vehicles, especially ATV's or equipment when not in use. If it is possible remove machinery from fields, especially near roads.

Identify your property by:

  • Keeping a record of the serial number, chassis and model numbers of machines.
  • Use metal engravers to mark tools and equipment with your postcode followed by the first two letters of your farm's name.
  • Consider physical crime prevention measures for ATV's and other farm vehicles.
  • There are a number of products on the market which would deter persons from stealing such vehicles, ie Data tag, Quadloc, etc.
  • Always keep tools and small pieces of machinery locked away. Do not leave them lying about.

Farmwatch

Farmwatch schemes are operating in many areas and have proved successful in reducing rural crime.
