Forest Site Security

Forestry workers can help prevent crime on rural sites by following some simple advice:

  • Lock up all tools when they are not in use.
  • If the tools are locked in a building or container ensure they are secured with a good quality lock or padlock. Metal containers should be secured with heavy duty closed shackle padlocks.
  • Clearly mark your property. If possible photograph the property including plant.
  • Remove ignition keys from all unattended plant and immobilise the plant when not in use.
  • Report anything suspicious to local police, noting registration numbers of vehicles etc.

Haulage contractors are using rural roads and tracks on a daily basis and they are potentially a good resource of information in relation to this type of crime. When using the forest tracks note anything suspicious and report it to police as soon as possible.

Recreational users are advised to use well known car parks where there are other vehicles and persons. Avoid using isolated areas. Do not leave any valuables in the vehicle and make sure it is secure before leaving it. When walking or cycling in the forests note anything suspicious, try to get a landmark to give a more definitive location.
