Fuel Tank Security

As the cost of fuel continues to rise, thieves are actively targeting fuel tanks at farms and goods yards across the region.

Some of these tanks have the capacity to store thousands of pounds worth of fuel and it is worth considering shelling out £2 for a padlock to protect it.

Following the advice below will make it harder for thieves to gain access to tanks:

  • Siting tanks out of sight offers thieves maximum opportunity to access without being seen. Fuel tanks should be situated within sight of nearby domestic buildings, and not hidden out of sight behind outbuildings or large machinery.
  • Control switches should be located in a secure building and the electricity supply turned off when the tank is not in use.
  • A good quality locking device should be fitted to all fuel tanks. While a determined thief will come equipped with a range of tools a locking device can mean the difference between his success and failure. A high quality shackled padlock will make access using bolt croppers very difficult.
  • The tank valve rather than the nozzle and hose which remain vulnerable to cutting, should be locked.
  • Additional security in the form of lighting, CCTV and external alarms should be considered.

Security checklist

  • Site tank in visible location
  • Secure control switches
  • Invest in good quality locks
  • Protect the tank valve
  • CCTV and alarm system
