Everyone wants to feel safe in their home and secure in the knowledge that when they go out or go on holiday their home will be not be burgled, however, many homes are still not sufficiently secured to withstand criminal attack. Secured by Design is the national Police crime prevention initiative that has reduced burglary by an average of 50% and up to 75% in some areas.

The Secured by Design initiative works on the basis of 'designing-out-crime'. It identifies potential crime problem areas in the built environment and applies a combination of environmental design principles with realistic levels of physical security to deter criminal activity and reduce crime risks.
In Dumfries and Galloway there are a number of housing developments that have achieved the Secured by Design award. The incidents reported to the Police within these developments is significantly lower than similar non Secured by Design developments. One particular housing development had 5 times the number of calls over a year than that of a neighbouring Secured by Design development.
