Smartwater

Smartwater is a forensic system which can assist in tracing the criminal or stolen property.

It works through the use of a forensically unique liquid, like a finger print. Each liquid holds a code that is different from another and these are held at a Smartwater database for identification purposes.

Smartwater is used to mark property in the homes or the workplace and if stolen and later recovered, we can trace the owner back with this uniquely marked ‘fingerprint’. This means property marked with the liquid has a distinctive code and is easier to trace.

Smartwater can also be used in a spray as part of an intruder alarm system. It is sprayed directly onto an intruder without them even knowing it happened.

Police custody areas throughout Dumfries and Galloway are now fitted with equipment which can identify the presence of Smartwater on anyone who is taken into custody. All custodies will tested to see if any Smartwater is on their clothing or body and these traces will be able to link the criminal back to the crime.

The liquid is not harmful and stays on the skin until exfoliation occurs. It is waterproof and virtually impossible to remove from clothing or shoes. So even if the suspect is caught weeks later, Smartwater evidence may still be on skin or clothes.

Police are working closely with partners across the region. Farm watch and neighbourhood watch schemes are actively involved with the programme.

Further detail can be found on the Smartwater website.
