Dumfries and Galloway boasts an abundance of rural beauty spots and top leisure and sport tourist attractions. These natural picturesque areas attract large numbers of visitors and local residents alike as people take advantage of the many leisure activities available.

Unfortunately those beauty spots can also attract opportunist thieves who may target unprotected property or vehicles.

Over the summer months we are increasing police patrols in all beauty spots and remote car parks in the region with the aim of reducing the opportunity for criminals to steal your property. Police officers will be on the lookout for suspicious activity in those areas, but you can also help by being extra vigilant and taking a few simple precautions.

Before you set off, make sure you have locked your vehicle and securely fastened any leisure equipment. Never leave any valuable items or electrical equipment on show and protectively mark it if possible. If you can, avoid isolated areas when parking your vehicle.

If you see anything or anyone you think is suspicious, contact the police immediately. Make a quick note of details such as the appearance, clothing and accent of the individuals concerned or the registration number of any vehicle they may be using. The make, colour and any distinctive markings of the vehicle can also assist police trace the suspects more quickly. Contact the police immediately no matter how insignificant you think it might be, you could prevent a crime or allow the police to catch criminals who’ve previously stolen items from vehicles like yours.
